The improved demonstration set of three unalloyed outer U tubes was evaluated and met specifications for irradiation candidates. Two 2-in. tubes with 60-mil nominal cladding were extruded for use in studying the effects of restraint on fuel during irradiation. Processing of a 1-in. tube and two earlier 2-in. tubes is almost complete. An outer tube billet composed of U-1 wt% Si stalled during extrusion but a U-0.3 wt% Al-0.5 wt% Si was successfully extruded. (J.R.D.)
