STUDY OF THE RADIOACTIVE RADIATION OF THE NEUTRON-DEFICIENT ISOTOPES OF HAFNIUM

A magnetic beta -spectrometer and a single-crystal scintillation spectrometer connected to a 200-channel amplitude analyzer were used for studying the neutron-deficient isotopes of Hf prepared by the bombardment of Ta by 660-Mev protons on the synchrocyclotron of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Studies in Dubna. The following isotopes were identified in the Hf fraction separated from the Ta without using a carrier Hf/sup 171/ (T/sub 1/2/, = 16 hours); Hf/sup 173/ (T/sub 1/2/= 24 hours); Hf/sup 175/ (T/sub 1/2/ = 70 days) and the daughter elements Lu/sup 171/ (T/sub 1/2/ = 8.1 days) and Lu/sup 173/ (T/sub 1/2/ = l.4 years). The first two short half-life Hf isotopes were closely studied on the 30 to 350-kev spectral range, determining the relative intensity of the K conversion lines and the H/L ratio of Hf/sup 171/ The error in the determined values of the K98 and Kl24 lines may reach 50%; for the other lines the results indicate only the order of magnitude. The gamma -spectra indicated transitions at 100 and l70 kev for Hf/sup 171/ and at 130 and 310 kev for Hf/sup 173/; there are also indications concerning lines with energies of 2l0 and 250 kev.
