Chemical and physico-chemical processes in the hightemperature reduction of niobium oxide by carbon were studied in a two-step reduction of 0.l5-mm niobium pentoxide powder (with 0.01% TiO, 0.06% Fe/O3, and 0.0l% SiO/) at l600 to 2000 deg C. The reduction of Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ to NbO/sub 2/ and to NbO is achieved in a relatively low vacuum or in low hydrogen or inert gas currents. The reduction to metal at these temperatures requires a higher vacuum. (R.V.J.)
