THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF NIOBIUM OXIDES (EQUILIBRIUM WITH CARBON AND ELECTROCHEMICAL MEASUREMENTS) (in Russian)

Specimens of niobium pentoxide (99.9% Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/) and metallic niobium (98.6% Nb) were used in experiments on equilibrium reduction and electromotive force. Equilibrium in hydrogen reduction at 1200 to l500 deg C was studied by a circulation method. Two stages of Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ reduction: 2.5 NbO/sub 2.4/ + H/sub 2/ yields 2.5 NbO/sub 2/ + H/sub 2/O and NbO/sub 2/ + H/ sub 2/ yields NbO + H/sub 2/O were investigated. The logarithmic polytherms of the equilibrium constant show for the first stage (with an accuracy of plus or minus 0.2%) lg Kp = 15050/4.575T + 1.3306 (1480 to 1673 deg K) and for the second stage (with an accuracy of plus or minus 0.3%) lgKp = 29490/4.575T + 1.3304 (1673 to l823 deg K). The results of the electromotive force experiments proved to be in good agreement with published data. (R.V.J.)
