The energies of combustion of niobium dioxide (NbO/sub 2/), niobium subnitride (Nb/sub 2/N) and, tentatively, tantalum subnitride (Ta/sub 2/N) were determined by bomb calorimetry. The results, in conjunction with the heats of formation of the corresponding pentoxides, lead to the following standard heats of formation at 298.15 deg K (kcal/mole): HbO/sub 2/, --190.9 /4PP 0.4; Nb/sub 2/ N, --61.1 plus or minus 1.0; and Ta/sub 2/N, --64.7 plus or minus 3.0 (tentative).
