OXIDATION KINETICS OF ZrBe$sub 13$ AND NbBe$sup 1$$sup 2$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4807827
Oxidation rates of the intermetallic compounds ZrBe/sub 13/ and NbBe/sub 12/ between 700 and l500 deg C were measured in oxygen by a volumetric method, uslng granular metal samples of known surface areas determined by a gas adsorption method. Oxidation of ZrBe/sub 13/ between 900 and 1500 deg C produced a BeO layer, and the thickening of the oxide layer with time followed the parabolic law, showing activatlon energies similar to those for beryllium metal oxidation. At 600 to 700 deg C, ZrBe/sub 13/ oxidized at an acceleratlng rate accompanied by disintegration of the metal phase; this behavior was similar to beryllium metal oxidation at 700 to 750 deg C. NbBe/sub 12/ did not show disintegrative oxidation but showed other complexities. The relation of the parabolic oxidation constants to self-diffusion and to the defect structure of BeO is discussed. A tentative conclusion is that transport through the BeO layer depends chiefly on the formation of Be/sup +2/ vacancies at the oxide-oxygen interface. (auth)
