CREEP OF ZIRCALOY-2 PRESSURE TUBES. 2. TRANSVERSE DIRECTION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4806745
Creep test results are reported on transverse specimens machined from a Zircaloy-2 pressure tube for NPD-2. Two series of tests were done for extrapolation over stress and temperature. The test conditions were as follows: temperature 300 deg C, stresses between 20,000 snd 47,500 lb/in/sup 2/; and stress 20,000 lb/sub 2/, temperatures between 300 and 500 deg C. The creep rates for tests at 300 deg C and low stresses were lower than those found previously for longitudinal specimens, but at high stresses there was an early onset of tertiary creep followed by rapid failure. The onset of tertiary creep was accompanied by elliptical necking; in tubes, because of the additional restraint opposing necking in the longitudinal direction, early necking is not expected to occur. Extrapolation of the creep rate over the temperature range appeared to be more successful than extrapolation over the stress range. A minimum creep rate of 6 x 10/sup -6%/h for 20,000 lb/in./sub 2/ at 300 deg C was found. (auth)
