Creep of Zircaloy-2 Pressure Tubes

Journal Article · · Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly
The Zircaloy-2 pressure tubes of NPD-2 and CANDU reactors are to operate under conditions of stress, temperature, and a high neutron flux. A description is given of the creep test program carried out on transverse and longitudinal specimens from the tubes to determine the variation in creep properties with stress and temperature. At operating conditions, the minimum creep rate was found to be less than 6 x 10/sup -6/%/hour and the estimated deformation in 30 years less than 0.3%. Transverse specimens failed erratically at high stresses because of unstable necking, but this is not expected to be a problem when the material is in the configuration of a tube.
