RELAXATION OF TORSIONAL STRESSES IN STAINLESS STEEL DURING IRRADIATION

OSTI ID:4805668
The shear stresses in torsionally loaded specimens of 304 stainless steel relaxed by as much as 7,500 psi when irradiated in a nuclear reactor at a temperature below 1OO deg C. The maximum exposure was 10/sup 21/ fast neutrons per square centimeter. The initial shear stresses of about 20,000 psi relaxed approximately 30%, which was the same as the relaxation previously reported for specimens of 304 stainless steel that were loaded in tension and irradiated at the same conditions of maximum shear stress, temperature, and exposure to fast neutrons. At an initial shear stress of 10,000 psi, the 20% relaxation in the torsional specimens was less than half that in the corresponding tensile specimens. At 5,000-psi shear stress in torsion, the stress relaxation was too small to be raeasured reproducibly. (auth)
