STRESS RELAXATION IN ZIRCALOY-2 DURING IRRADIATION AT LESS THAN 100 C
Technical Report
·
OSTI ID:4804867
The relaxation of tensile stresses in specimens of Zircaloy-2 that were irradiated at a temperature below l00 deg C was compared with the stress relaxation in unirradiated control specimens that were held at the same temperature for the same length of time. lrradiation had no effect on the relaxation of initial stresses of l0,000 and 15,000 psi in annealed specimens. An initial stress of 25,000 psi in annealed specimens relaxed to 19,000 psi with irradiation and to 15,000 psi without irradiation. An initial stress of l5,000 psi in l0% cold-worked specimens relaxed to between 8,000 and l0,000 psi with irradiation and to l2,000 psi without irradiation. The radiation exposures, which were as high as 8 x l0/sup 20/ fast neutrons per square centimeter, decreased the ductility and increased the strength of the specimens. (auth)
