A method for precisely determining wesk magnetic fields is given which may be used to measure local variations in earth's magnetic field in geophysical prospecting. The method comprises locating in the magnetic field to be measured a solution of a paramagnetic free radical of stationary hyperfine structure and having an electronic resonance frequency band, applying an alternating magnetic field to saturate the electronic resonance band, and measuring the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation sbsorbed by tae atomic nuclei of the solvent. The solution preferredly is an aqueous solution of a nitrosodisulfonate, and a device for carrying out the method is described in U. S. Patent
