PRELIMINARY WORK ON MOLYBDENUM SPECIES IN NITRIC ACID

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4804459
Investigations were made to determine the nature of Mo species in HNO/ sub 3/ media. Spectral measurements show that Mo(V) has a maximum near 430 m mu in HNO/sub 3/. Attempts to determine Mo(V), in the presence of Mo(VI), in HNO/ sub 3/ were unsuccessful. The extraction of Mo(VI) from a solution of ammonium molybdate in HNO/sub 3/ by tributyl phosphate was found to have a maximum depending on the acidity of the added nitric acid. The optimum acidity for maximum extraction depends on the Mo concentration. The spectrum of the TBP solution of Mo(VI) exhibited an absorption band near 750 m mu , indicating compound formation. Mo(VI) in HNO/sub 3/ does not form anionic complexes as it does in HCl. Equilibrium experiments using cation and anion exchange resins indicate that Mo(VI) in HNO/sub 3/ can exist as species with one charge per Mo atom. Uranyl molybdate was found to be a product of treating U--Mo alloys with HNO/sub 3/. Molybdenum(VI) and (V) are also formed, the latter material possibly being colloidal. (P.C.H.)
