Results of activation analysis with the Triga Mark 1research reactor on the John Jay Hopkins Laboratory are described. By use of a rotary specimen rack it is possible to irradiate 80 specimens simultaneously at the same average neutron flux. Irradiations for activation products with half lives greater than about minutes are normally performed in the rotary specimen rack and the reactor is usually operated at a power level of 250 kW by a thermal neutron flux of 1.8 x 10/sup 12/ n cm/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/. Irradiations of products with half lives of approximately 10 min or less are usually performed with a pneumatic transfer system in a fuel-element position in the core. Calibration is carried out by simultaneous irradiation of reference standards of the elements. The postirradiation treatment is analyzing by using gamma spectrometry. If necessary radiochemical separations are performed. The different techniques of treatment and counting are described. The sensitivity of the method is confirmed by results of activation analysis of a most different kind of substance. (auth)
