EFFECT OF THE CHELATING AGENT BIS 2-AMINOETHYL ETHER TETRAACETIC (BAETA) ON RADIOSTRONTIUM EXCRETION IN MAN
The effectiveness of the calcium salt of BAETA in enhancing radiostrontium excretion was studied in 6 patients at the time of the injection of the tracer and in 2 of these, 2 weeks thereafter (early and late phase). Infusions of Ca-BAETA led to a considerable increase of urinary Sr/sup 85/ excretion in the early phase in 5 of 6 patients who had normal or low urinary calcium excretion. The chelate was ineffective in the sixth patient who has hypercalciuria due to the osteolytic bone disease. The comparative effectiveness of Ca-BAETA and of calciura gluconate was studied in 3 of these patients. Intravenous calcium gluconate, as well as Ca-BAETA, was ineffective in the hypercalciuric patient, while both agents were equally effective in a patient with normal calcium metabolism. In the third patient, who had a tendency to retain calcium due to osteoblastic bone disease, Ca-BAETA increased the urinary Sr/sup 85/ excretion fivefold, while infusions of calcium gluconate did not lead to an increase of the calciuria or to enhancement of radiostrontium excretion. In 2 patients in the late phase, Ca-BAETA led to a prompt increase of urinary Sr/ sup 85/ excretion. (auth)
