FACTORS MODIFYING RADIOSTRONTIUM EXCRETION IN MAN
A metabolic study was conducted to compare the effects of calcium, of ammonium chloride, and of the combination of the two agents upon the excretion of radiostrontium in man. Urinary calcium and radiostrontium excretion increased markedly when calcium gluconate was administered intravenously or NH/sub 4/Cl was given orally. The effects of the two agents administered simultaneously were additive. This additive effect is apparently due to increased concentration of calcium ions in the extracellular fluid leading to increased excretion of calcium and radiostrontium. decreased deposition of the two elements in bone, and increased removal of deposited calcium and radiostrontium from bone during NnCl- acidosis. NH/sub 4/Cl administered 15 days after exposure was as effective in enhancing radiostrontium excretion as in the early phase. The effectiveness of high calcium diet in promoting urinary radiostrontium excretion seems to depend on its effectiveness in raising the urinary calcium excretion. Regardless of this effect, NH/sub 4/Cl is still capable of enhancing radiostrontium excretion significantly due to interference with the metabolism of ihe absorbed dietary calcium as described above.
