THE ISOMER IN $sup 119$Sn AND THE QUADRUPOLE MOMENT OF THE FIRST EXCITED STATE

Using the Mossbauer effect, the nuclear quadrupole splitting of the first excited state of Sn/sup 119/ was measured in tin compounds, and a comparison was made of isomer shifts of the ground state transition. The isomer shlft is interpreted in terms of a change in the mean square deformation of the nucleus ( beta /sup 2/) arising mainly from the zero-point vibrational motion. The difference in ( beta /sup 2/) between the excited and ground states is +6 x 10/sup -4/. From estimates of the field gradient at the Sn/sup 119/ nucleus, a value of about -8 x 10/sup -26/ cm/sup 2/ was assigned to the quadrupole moment of the 3/2/sup +/ state. Values of the two measured quantities are calculated using a model of a single particle coupled to a vibrator. The inclusion of pairing correlations of the nuclear force is necessary to obtain agreement with experimental results. (auth)
