Pure phenylacetylene, carefully degassed and dried under vacuum, was irradiated by Co/sup 65/ gamma rays. Ten-ml samples were exposed to dose intensities from 36 to 2460 r/min at room temperature. After evaporation under vacuum of the residual monomer, a yellow orange product was obtained that is soluble in acetone, benzene, estors, and CCl/sub 4/. It is insoluble in petroleum ether and alcohol, and the purified product melts at 170 to 190 deg C. The G values obtained are tabulated for various dose rates. (J.S.R.)
