RADIOCHEMICAL POLYMERIZATION AND CYCLIZATION OF PHENYLACETYLENE AND METHYLACETYLENE (in Italian)

Journal Article · · Gazzetta Chimica Italiana (Italy)
OSTI ID:4030725
Phenylacetylene and methylacetylene samples were irradiated with a 6000 deg C /sup 60/Co gamma -ray source of intensity 7270 r/min Phenylacetylene polymerization increased with the dose to 10.55% polymer at 132 x 10/sup 6/ r. Melting points (m.p,) and molecular weights (m.w.) are tabulated for some intermediate doses; m.w. increased from 396 to 473 as dose varied from 18.4 x 10/ sup 6/ to 112 x 10/sup 6/ r. The infrared spectrum is the same as that from a Ziegler-catalyst polymerized sample; this and hydrogenation data (uptake 17%) are explained by a structure with conjugated double bonds. Ultraviolet spectrum and m.p. identified 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene as a second product. The polymer could be fractionated by repeated extraction with heptane. Solutions of phenylacetylene in benzene were irradiated by 49.3 x 10/sup 6/ r and yield determined as a function of concentration. From 40% to 80% (phenylacetylene by wt), G (molecules/ 100 ev) ranged from 16.9 to 19.5; G for pure phenylacetylene was 11.1. Methylacetylene was studied in similar fashion; max yield of polymer found was 7.38%, at max dose used, 181 x 10/sup 6/ r, having a m.w. of 300. The last figure was the highest of m.w.'s found. Trimeric products were 1,2,4- trimethylbenzene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene and others. The infrared spectrum of the polymer, which was sensitive to air, showed peaks in the hydroxyl, allene, ketone, and acid regions. Hydrogenation indicated the presence of double bonds. The kinetics of both polymerizations were discussed very briefly; the rates show a slight decrease with time. (BBB)
