COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF THE EFFECT OF X-IRRADIATION ON PROTOZOA AND MAMMALS. Progress Report, March 1, 1961-December 1, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4802879
Progress is reported in studies on the biochemistry of irradiated protozoa. Tetrahymena pyriformis were shown to contain considerable catalase activity, 90% of which was found associated with the particulate fractions. Data are included from studies on the properties of Tetrahymena catalase, the effects of catalase inhibitors on growth and respiration of Tetrahymena, and the effect of P/sup 32/ in the growth medium on growth of Tetrahymena. Progress is also reported in studies on the effect of whole-body x irradiation on lysomal enzymes in rat spleen and liver. A new technique for the determination of nucleotide deaminase activity was developed and applied to the assay of tissues from normal and tumor-bearing rats. Results are included from preliminary studies on the effect of x radiation on deaminase activity in rat liver. (C.H.)
