COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF THE EFFECTS OF X-RADIATION ON MAMMALS AND PROTOZOA. Progress Report, November 1, 1962-September 1, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4144487
Simplified methods of assays for desoxynucleotide deaminases were developed. Results are reported from studies on the effects of doses of 700-r gamma radiation on enzyme activity in organs of normal and tumor-bearing rats. Emphasis was placed on effects on the activity of lysomal enzymes, thymidylate phosphatase, uridylate phosphatase, and desoxynucleotide desminases in cellular and subcellular fractions of spleen and liver. The effects of irradiation in the presence of various metabolites on respiration in Tetrahymena were also studied. Results indicated that catalase activity in Tetrahymena may in some measure account for the high resistance of this protozoan to radiation. (C.H.)
