BERYLLIUM OXIDE SINGLE CRYSTAL GROWTH. PART I. ALKALI MOLYBDATA METHOD

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4802286
The growth of beryllium oxide in alkali molybdates, principally Li/sub 2/ MoO/sub 4/-MoO/sub 3/, resulted in the production of crystals up to five millimeters (imperfect) and two millimeters (clear, well-formed) in size. Although several techniques were employed, a slow cooling rate of 25 to 1.5 deg C/ hr, starting at 1400 deg C, was found most suitable. The crystals commonly developed some modification of the pyramidal habit as a growth form, but under equilibrium conditions prismatic crystals were produced. Details of other growth features are described. The mechanisms of growth in terms of current theories of crystal growth are discussed. The experimental results generally appear to be consistent with the theories. The general behavior of the alkali molybdate- beryllium oxide system and the character of the produced crystals are described. However, much study remains to be done to fully understand all the details of growth and to control the causes for imperfection in crystals grown from alkali molybdates. (auth)
