ON THE ROLE OF GRAIN BOUNDARIES AND DISLOCATIONS IN THE LUMINESCENCE OF ACTIVATED ALKALI HALIDE CRYSTALS (in Russian)

A microscopic investigation was made of the emission topography of alkali halide crystals. The effect of thermal treatment and defects, generated by plastic deformation or by x-irradiation and subsequent bleaching, on the formation of luminescence centers in alkali halide crystals was examined. It was concluded that the luminescence of typical alkali halide phosphors is not connected with the activator particles that are situated on the boundaries of grains whose dimensions are 0.1 to 0.01 mm. Most of the luminescence centers evidently correspond to the activator ions in substitutional sites, and the more complex centers correspond to the activator ions in clusters with point defects of the lattice.
