MEASUREMENT OF THE MAGNETIC MOMENT OF THE $lambda$$sup 0$ HYPERON
A measurement of the magnetic moment of the DELTA /sup 0/ hyperon gives the value mu /sub DELTA o --1.5 plus or minus 0.5 nuclear magnetons. Polarized DELTA /sup 0/ hyperons are produced by 1.02 plus or minus 0.03 Bev/c pi /sup +/ mesons incident on a Be target in the reaction pi + + n yields DELTA /sup 0/ + K/sup +/ rong magnetic field, the DELTA /sup 0/ are observed to decay in a parallel plate spark chamber triggered by an electronic counter logic. The asymmetry of the pi /sup -/ from the decay delta /sup 0/ yields pi /sup -/ + p provides the method for determining the axis of polarization. The magnetic field ildd flight path are such that a magnetic moment of one nuclear magneton would precess 16.5 deg in a plane perpendicular to the DELTA /sup 0/0 trajectory. Measurement of the angle of rotation of the decay pattern with field on, off, and reversed give the magnitude of the moment; the sense of rotation yields the sign. (auth)
