IRRADIATION DAMAGE CLUSTERS IN THE OXIDES OF BERYLLIUM AND MAGNESIUM

Evidence was obtained for the presence of defect clusters in both BeO and MgO by transmission electron microscopy. Polycrystalline BeO and single crystal MgO were irradiated at 150 deg C to a dose of 3 x 10/sup 19/ nvt. For MgO, heating at 100 deg C intervals in the range 300 to 1200 deg C produced a steady diminution of the damage evidenced by lattice parameter and macroscopic expansion measurements, but detectable loops were not readily distinguishable until 900 deg C. Annealing above this temperature caused them to increase in size and decrease in numbers. In BeO, the same phenomena as occurred in irradiated MgO on annealing appeared to occur in unrrradiated BeO during examination in the electron microscope. Experimental observations led to the conclusion that the production of defects may be resulting from direct collisions between the electrons and lattice atoms. (M.C.G.)
