THE GROWTH OF NEUTRON IRRADIATED MAGNESIUM OXIDE

S>Electron microscope studies of neutron irradiated magnesium oxide single crystals have been correlated with macroscopic growth and x-ray measurements. At a dose of 3 x 10/sup 19/ nvt > 1 Mev it is shown that the presence of irradiation induced defect clusters accounts for about a quarter of the macroscopic growth. At a dose of 4 x 10/sup 20/ nvt > 1 Mev the loops become so large that they degenerate into a tangle of dislocation lines; in this form the damage is very resistant to annealing and even after an hour at 1800 deg C a quarter of the irradiation growth is still retained.
