INTERACTION OF FAST NEUTRONS WITH URANIUM AND THORIUM NUCLEI (in Russian)

A reactor neutron beam was used for studying the interaction of fast neutrons in the energy range of 3.5 to 13.5 Mev, using spheric U or Th scatterers and recording the neutrons on a 100-mm thick nuclear emulsion. The angular scatter of the incident neutrons was plus or minus 3 deg ; that of the secondary neutrons 6 deg 30'. The measurements involved the determ:nation of the secondary neutrons of the reactor neutron beam scattered by Th or U, measuring the background neutron spectrum without the scatterer followed by determination of the flux of primary neutrons from the reactor. Thus, secondary neutron spectra were obtained under 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, and 150 deg for U and under 30, 60, 90, 120, and 165 deg for Th. The data were used for calculating the differential interaction cross section of U and Th with primary neutrons was calculated for the 4, 5, and 6 Mev range. Total cross sections were also calculated in the 30 to 150 deg range. The results showed the basic features of elastic scattering phenomena; the contribution of fission and inelastic scattering processes were found to be quite small at the energy levels examined. The data agree well with available results in the 4 to 12-Mev region. (TTT)
