There are only a few experimental data on the radiative capture cross sections of U/sup 238/ and Th/sup 232/ in the energy range below 200 Mev; measurements were therefore carried out for determining the ratio of these cross sections to the cross section of the B/sup 10/(n, alpha ) reaction. The Th/sup 232/ and U/sup 238/ specimens and the ionization chamber with the B/sup 10/ layer were exposed to a fast neutron flux. The measurements were carried out with a Van-de-Graaff accelerator using the Li(p,n) reaction as the neutron source. The chamber and the specimens were placed at an angle of 91 deg with respect to the direction of the accelerated proton beam. The energy scatter observed amounted to plus or minus 4 and plus or minus 6 kev for the Th and U specimens, respectively. The radiative cross section values of U/sup 238/ agreed well with previously reported data. At 54 kev, the value obtained was about 20% lower than that reported by other authors; similar differences were noted also at 171 and 158 kev. The radiative capture cross section of Th/sup 232/ decreased with decreasing neutron energy; in this case, the previously reported data was about 30% below the results obtained. (TTT)
