SMALL-ANGLE SCATTERING OF 0.8 AND 2.8 MEV NEUTRONS (in Russian)

Previous investigations indicated an additional contribution of the scattering cross section of U and Pu in the scattering of neutrons with energies of about 2 Mev at angles below 8 to 10 deg , in the range of the Schwinger type (Phys. Rev. 73, 407(1948)) scattering. The energy dependence of this effect was further studied at angles from 3 to 25 deg with fast neutrons having energies of 0.8 and 2.8 Mev. The 0.8Mev neutrons were obtained by collimation of recoil protons from the broad spectrunn. The results obtained agreed well within the limits of experimental error with Schwinger's scattering theory. Uslng the 2.8-Mev neutrons a marked increase of the scattering cross section of U and Th was observed at angles less than 10 deg . No satisfactory explanation can be given for this observation at the present time. (TTT)
