A simple method for the energy calibration of liquid scintillators is described. By correlation of the energy of the Compton edge to the half-value of the curve of the Compton spectrum, a straight line going through the corrordinate origin and extending over the entire measured energy range was obtained. For the calibration, twelve different gamma lines with energies from 0.1 to 2.5 Mev were used. The validity of this energy correlation was tested by means of the Curie diagrams of P/sup 32/, S/sup 35/ and Tl/sup 204/. The values obtained for the maximum BETA energies agree from 1 to 2% with the known values. The theoretical assumptions are discussed. The method necessitates no corrections for the resolving power of the scintillator or for scattering and absorption of BETA rays and is very suitable for the convenient energy determination in BETA spectroscopy with liquid scintillators. It can also be applied when the sample to be measured is dissolved in the scintillator liquid. (tr-auth)
