ORBITAL ELECTRON CAPTURE RATIO AND BETA SPECTRUM OF $sup 204$Tl

A direct measurement of the L/K electron capture ratio is made for Tl/ sup 204/. An internal source scintillation counter technique is used. A crystah is grown containing Tl/sup 204/, and this crystal is totally enclosed in a well- type scintillation crystal. The experimental ratio obtained for this unique first forbidden transition ( DELTA J = 2) is 0.42 plus or minus 0.05. This value may be compared with the ratio 0.45 plus or minus 0.05 calculated from the electron capture transition energy. In addition, information is obtained on the beta /sup -/ decay branch. The low energy end of the Fermi-Kurie plot of the beta /sup -/ spectrum, after application of an exact shape correction factor, deviates slightly downwards from a straight line. (auth)
