Following simple operative exposure of the spleen, as well as after subsequent irradiation, there is a nonspecific reaction in the peripheral blood during the first ten days characterized by lymphopenia and simultaneous granulocytosis. These changes are also initiated by percutaneous irradiation of the spleen. These, however, are followed by a marked alteration in the granulocytic series, indicating the activity of a leucodepressing factor. This factor depends on dose. In addition the validity of Wilder's law could be demonstrated for this mechanism.
