A gas pump is designed which includes a gas-lubricated journal bearing and which has application in the monitoring of reactor gaseous coolants. The pump comprises a casing having an inlet and an outlet, and a journal and journal bearing assembly housed therein. The journal and bearing defines between them rings of part-circumferential viscosity grooves, each of which communicates at one end with the inlet and at the other end the outlet. (D.L.C.)
