JOURNAL BEARINGS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4837738
A hydrostatic gas journal bearing is designed which has a load capacity in excess of that provided by an externally pressurized orifice compensated journal bearing of equivalent size and power. The bearing has at least three portions in sequence along the bearing, the first being an externally pressurized orifice compensated journal bearing portion, the second being a circumferential groove with means for controlling the pressure in the groove, and the third being a journal bearing portion with means for applying pressure which is circumferentially asymmetric. Another circumferential groove and another externally pressurized orifice compensated journal bearing portion may also be used as fourth and fifth portions of the bearing, respectively. (D.L.C.)
