EFFECT OF LOW TEMPERATURES AND PROTECTIVE AGENTS ON RADIOSENSITIVITY OF SOME ANIMAL CELLS

Journal Article · · Folia Biologica (Prague) (Czechoslovakia)
OSTI ID:4800438

Results are reported from studies on the protective effect of cysteine, AET, thiourea, and sodium thiosulfate on irradiated Ehrlich ascitic tumor and bone marrow cells. Cysteine and AET were found to protect ascitic tumor cells and bone marrow cells against the effects of ionizing radiation at temperatures of -78.4 and -192 deg C. Thiourea and thiosulfate gave protection at room temperature only. The results indicate that SH substances forming mixed disulfides provide protection against the direct effects of ionizing radiation even in the case of such complex systems as animal cells. (C.H.)
