HYPERFINE STRUCTURE OF THE 14.4-kev STATE OF Fe$sup 57$, COMBINED IN VARIOUS IRON CARBONYLS (in German)

The Mossbauer spectra of the 14.4 kev gamma ray of Fe/sup 57/ in iron carbonyls were investigated. The data reveal the existence of electric field gradients at the Fe/sup 57/ nuclei, produced by the electrons in the molecular orbitals of the compounds. Various aspects of the molecular structure and bond could be deduced from the magnitude of the observed quadrupole splitting. The Mossbauer spectra indicate a preferred orientation of the molecules in solid Fe(CO)/sub 5/. The sign of quadrupole moment of the 14.4-kev level of Fe/sup 57/ is found to be positive from these data. (auth)
