HYPERFINE STRUCTURE OF THE 14.4 kev GAMMA LINE OF $sup 57$Fe IN SOME IRON OXY-HYDROXIDES INVESTIGATED WITH THE MOSSBAUER EFFECT

The hyperfine structure of the 14.4-kev gamma line of Fe/sup 57/ in lepidocrocite ( gamma -FeOOH) and geothite ( alpha -FeOOH) was studied. In lepidocrocite only the quadrupole splitting DELTA E = (0.45 plus or minus 0.05) mm/sec is observed. In geothite, besides the quadrupole splitting DELTA E = (0.24 plus or minus 0.05) mm/sec, two values of the magnetic field intensity at iron nuclei H/sub 1/ = (282 plus or minus 5) kOe and H/sub 2/= (342 plus or minus 7) kOe are found. This indicates the existence of two sublattices in alpha -FeOOH. (auth)
