COLUMNAR RECOMBINATION LUMINESCENCE IN ARGON-NITROGEN MIXTURES

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
Luminescence from columnar electron-ion recombination following alpha particle and fission fragment ionization of an argon-nitrogen gas mixture is detected, and an estimate of the period for recombination made. In the presence of an electric field, a decrease in particle scintillation pulseheight from a photomultiplier tube is attributed to a loss of recombination luminescenee by ion collection. The relative variation in the magnitude of this decrease with photomultiplier clipping time constant indicates that recombination occurs within 10/sup -7/ sec for alpha particles in Ar + 6% N/sub 2/ at two atmospheres pressure.
