Some Results on the Fluorescence of Gases Excited by High-energy Charged Particles; QUELQUES RESULTATS CONCERNANT LA FLUORESCENCE DE GAZ EXCITES PAR DES PARTICULES CHARGEES DE GRANDE ENERGIE

The fluorescence induced by high energy charged particles is investigated with argon, krypton, xenon helium, nitrogen, and a mixture of argon and nitrogen. The results showed that the period of luminescence is very short, usually less than 10/sup -8/ sec. A linear response is obtained as a function of the energy lost by the particle to the gas, even in the case of strongly ionizing particles such as fission fragments. (J.S.R)
