IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4799292
To prevent a too high number of access holes passing through the reactor pressure vessel wall, a hollow control rod and a safety element can move inside the same reactor channel. The hollow control rod is coupled with a tube threaded outside and engaging in a female screw, the rotation of which induces the axial movement of the control rod. This threaded tube slides on a guiding tube in which the safety element may be displaced. This safety element is flxed to a piston sliding in the guiding tube and is composed of a series of chain- links each enclosed by a neutron absorbing cylinder. In case of emergency the safety element is blown by gas pressure into the reactor core. (NPO)
