SAFETY ROD FOR A NUCLEAR REACTOR COOLED AND MODERATED BY A LIQUID

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4792145
A safety rod for a nuclear reactor has a hydraulic driwe system and two stable positions, that is to say, the rod completely introduced into and completely withdrawn from the reactor core. The said rod is fixed to a cylinder disposed to slide on a stationary Pistcn fustened at one extremity of a hollow piston bar. This piston bar is provided in the proximity of the piston with holes through which the inside of the said hollow bar communicates with the space enclosed by the movable cylinder and with a pressure liquid supply source. The said cylinder may be immobilized by an electromagnet, which holds at the same time an axially displacable valve body in closed position. On de-energizing the electromagnet, the valve opens for creating the communication of the inside of the hollow piston bar with the reactor pressure vessel, so that the pressure in the cylinder is equalized with the pressure in the reactor vessel, stopping any lack of balance of the hydraulic pressure acting on the cylinder; the cylinder with the control rod may fall freely into the reactor core.
