CONTROL ROD DRIVE FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

A control rod drive especially adapted for pressurized water reactors comprises a movable piston sliding in a cylinder. This piston is connected with the control rod by a coupling bar. A high-pressure source communicates via a first duct and throttling means in communication with one side of the piston, while a second duct having flow control means serves for evacuating the high- pressure water from this side of the piston to its other side. This other side may communicate via further flow control means with the inside of the reactor pressure vessel. The latter flow control means are normally in the open position. The pressure in the pressure source is higher than the pressure in the reactor pressure vessel, so that for holding the control rod in balance or for raising or lowering it, the pressure in the space at the side of the piston in communication with the pressure source can be controlled by cortrolling by the flow control means the evacuation of the pressurized water from the space.
