CHANGES IN THE FUNCTIONS OF THE KIDNEYS IN ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS

A study was made of the filtration-reabsorption and secretory functions of the kidneys in dogs with acute radiation sickness and their dependence on the gravity and stage of the disease. The results of the present tests were analyzed according to the stage of the radiation sickness: grave, medium, and slight (general radiation) together with an indication of the change in the kidney functions due to local irradiations of the kidney. The results showed that acute radiation sickness caused by general x-ray irradiation led to changes in the functions of the kidneys, the extent of the changes being governed by the gravity of the sickness. Marked changes develop in the primary radiation stage and at the height of the sickness. The most marked disturbances of urine excretion developed in the terminal period. In the latent period and during recuperation, disturbances were less marked or even absent. Changes were most marked in the glomerular fiitration and went so far as complete cessation of excretion in the terminal period of grave cases. Changes in canalicular reabsorption were less marked. The renal canalicule's secretory ability for the excretion of phenol red was impaired. Chloride excretion with the urine dropped without notlceable rlse ln the chloride content of the blood, evidently due to retention of the chlorides in the tissues. Disturbances of urine excretion after local irradiation of the kidney area ensued only when the x-ray dose greatly exceeded the therapeutic dose. Changes in the kidney function due to general irradiation were due mainly to neurotrophic disturbances in the body and, to a lesser extent, to the direct injurious action of the x-rays on the renal tissue.
