ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE VOLUMETRIC DETERMINATION OF ZIRCONIUM IN URANIUM/ ZIRCONIUM MASTER ALLOY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4798384
The alloy is dissolved in hydrofluoric and nitric acids. Sulphuric acid is added and the solution is evaporated to rumes of sulphur trioxide. After dilution, an aliquot is taken and evaporated to dryness. The residue is dissolved in hydrochloric acid and zirconium is precipitated with mandelic acid. After a suitable digestion period, the precipitate is filtered off and dissolved in sulphuric acid. The solution is diluted and an appropriate aliquot taken. - Ammonium tartrate and EDTA solutions are added and the pH is adjusted to 2.0. The solution is boiled for a few minutes, then cooled and the pH again adjusted to 2.0. The volume of EDTA solution in excess of that needed for complexing the zirconium is determined by titration with a standard solution of bismuth nitrate using xylenol orange as indicator. (auth)
