YTTRIUM-96 AND STRONTIUM-93: NEW NUCLEAR DATA
Journal Article

Targets of Zr/sup 96/ were irradiated with 14.5 Mev neutrons and the decay of the resultant beta -particle and gamma -ray activity was found to have two compenents with half lives of 2.3 and 8.3 min. Only the shorter lived component was present in yttrium fractions chemically separated from the targets. This activity was assigned to the previously unreported isotope Y/sup 96/ produced by the reaction Zr/sup 96/(n p)Y/sup 96/. The longer-lived component was due to the (n,a) product Sr03 whose half life was reported previously. Other details are as follows: Y/sup 96/: T/sub 1/2/ 2.3 plus or minus o.1 min. E beta max 3.5 Mev; E gamma 0 - 2.5 Mev, resolved peaks at 0.7 and 1.0 Mev; and Sr/ sup 93/:T1/2 8.3 plus or minus 0.5 min; E beta max 2.0 Mev; E gamma 0 - 2 Mev, resolved peaks at 0.6 and 2.0 Mev. The short-lived Y/sup 06/ was chemically separated from other activation products using an automatically controlled centrifuge. The apparatus, which has some novel features and may be employed for other rapid chemical separations, is described in detail. (auth)
