SHORT-LIVED ISOTOPES OF Nb AND Zr FROM FISSION

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.
The nuclides Nb/sup 98/, Nb/sup 99/, and Zr/sup 99/, plus three other shortlived beta -emitters tentatively identified as Nb/sup 100/, Nb/sup 101/, and Z/sup 98/, were observed in the Nb and Zr fractions separated from U/sup 235/ fission products. The properties observed are as follows. Nb/sup 98/: t/sub 1/ 2/ = 5l.5 plus or minus l.0 min; E/sub gamma / (Mev) = 0.330 plus or minus 0. 0-720 plus or minus 0.010, 0.780 plus or minus 0.0l0, 1.l6, l.44, l.52, l.68, l.88, l-93, 2.24, and 2.7; E/sub beta max=3.l plus or minus 0.2 Mev; Q beta / =4.6 plus or minus 0.2 Mev. Nb/sup 99/: t/sub 1/2/ = 2.4 plus or minus 0.3 min; E/sub gamma /(Mev) = 0.l00? 0.002. 0.260 plus or minus 0.005. Zr/sup 99/: t/sub 1/2/ =35 plus or minus 5 sec. Nb/sup 100/: t/sub 1/2/ = 3.0 plus or minus min; E gamma (Mev) =0.l40 plus or minus 0.005, 0.360 plus or minus O.OlO, 0.450 plus or minus 0.0l0, O.53O plus or minus 0.010, 0.65, 2.2, 2.3, 2.65, and 2.8. Nb/sup 101/: t/sub 1/2/= l.0 plus or minus 0.2 min. Zr/sup 98/: t/sub 1/2/ approximately l min. A search was made for a low-spin isomer of Nb/sub 96/ by rapid beta - and gamma -counting of Zr samples which were bombarded with 3.0 to 5.5 Mev protons. No activity attributable to such an isomer was observed. The low-spin isometric state, if it exists. has a half-life less than 5 sec. (auth)
