A test is described to determine the physical integrity of an advanced- type nichrome-molybdenum fuel element, and the thermocouple attachment method used on the specimen under LITR conditions. The fuel speclmen was a single cylinder containing 3.14 g of U/sup 235/ as UO/sub 2/. The test operated for 90.5 hours at 2100 deg F, including 8 hours at reduced reactor power. During this time five reactor shutdowns and two setbacks caused thermal cycling of the specimen. The exit air activity remained constant for over 50 hours, then increased slowly, until high activity caused the test to be terminated. The total neutron dosage received by the specimen was 5.06 x 10/sup 18/ nvt. (auth)
