A reactor fuel element of the kind described in British Patent 850,015, wherein sleeves contarning fissile material are located between a graphite tubular container and a central graphite rod, is designed with means for reducing coolant contamination due to back-diffusion of fission prodacts into the coolant circuit. The graphite container is made from low-permeability graphite, and its top is covered by a porous graphite plug so that some coolant diffuses into the element to dilute the fission products.
