A means to prevent back-diffusion of fission products through the pores in the graphite moderator of cylindrical fuel elements is described. The rate of coolant diffusion through the graphite decreases more rapidly than that of the fission products so that an optimum point must be accepted. A coolant gas inlet plug of higher permeability than the container wall is described. This provides means for diluting the volatile fission products so that there is less diffusion in the coolant region where there is low fissionproduct concentration. (R.E.U.)
