The three main problems in the field of space biology are the effect of external, space factors on living organisms, the development of biological methods of supporting life during space travel and on various planets, and a study of the conditions necessary for extraterrestrial life. The external factors include (1) weightlessness, and the effects of noise, vibration and acceleration (2) the effects of various forms of radiation and heat (3) the effects of isolation, cramped quarters, feeding etc. The electrocardiogram results on Gagarin and Titov show that the pulse rate fluctuates somewhat more widely under the prolonged effect of weightlessness. Titov developed symptoms of seasickness such as dizziness and weakness. These symptoms abated somewhat, after he went to sleep, but did not disappear completely. It is believed that the receptors of a number of afferent systems in the body were affected by weightlessness. The available data indicate that some shielding will be necessary to protect man from radiation during space flight. Genetic data from insects and plants aboard the space ships are being accumulated.
