The Usefulness of o-, m-, and P-Oligophenylenes as Solutes for Liquid Scintillators; UBER DIE VERWENDBARKEIT VON o-, m-, UND p-OLIGOPHENYLENEN ALS SOLUTE FLUSSIGER SZINTILLATOREN

Forty-six compounds, principally p-, o-, m-oligophenylenes and 1,3,5- triaryl substituted benzenes were measured with respect to the mean fluorescence wavelength and relative maximum pulse height under standard conditions; this permitted a direct comparison with corresponding literature values. Only the p- oligophenylenes in their maximum relative pulse heights are more than l0% better than the usually used standard PPO. Three compounds were found to be suitable for counting at low temperatures. It could be shown that for a good scintillation capacity coplanar standardization possibilities of the molecules are necessary. The maximum relative pulse height decreases according to the weight of the steric rotational hindrance. (tr-auth)
